After the Strip · MAVEN

I Like Being Here

Maven likes the moment a student’s next step becomes clearer. She likes being useful at the desk. She is also developing an informed opinion about the label printer.

The work gives her more than one kind of experience. Sometimes she can explain something well enough that Tasha asks to borrow her approach. Sometimes a student’s question reaches beyond what she knows, and she needs help connecting them with the staff member who can review the account.

Both belong in the same job. Asking for help does not erase the useful explanation she gave earlier.

Tasha becomes someone Maven looks forward to seeing, with snack preferences that deserve cross-examination and theater opinions that require considerably more volume than her desk voice. A shift begins to include familiar company.

When Maven’s supervisor asks what she wants more experience doing, she has an answer: welcome sessions. She has tried a part of the work and wants more of it.

She did not need to know that on her first morning. Showing up gave her something to discover.

What part of something you have recently tried would you like more experience with?
